Angola’s National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG) and Sonangol Exploração & Produção (Sonangol EP) have successfully completed the drilling and testing of the Katambi-2 appraisal well in Block 24, confirming a commercially viable gas discovery, the ANPG announced on Thursday.
Located in the Benguela Basin, the well was drilled 1.3 kilometres from the Katambi-1 well and encountered two productive intervals with a combined thickness of approximately 331 metres. The reservoirs showed average porosity of 9-12% and permeability higher than that recorded at Katambi-1, for which drilling began in 2014.
Initial testing delivered a stabilised flow rate of 1.16 mcm (41 mcf) per day of gas and 1,160 boepd of condensate, with no water or hydrogen sulphide detected. ANPG and Sonangol EP said the results strengthen the economic viability of developing the discovery and its potential contribution to Angola’s hydrocarbons production. The test was also the first complete drill stem test conducted on a non-associated gas reservoir in Angola.
A preliminary evaluation of the test results indicated the well has the potential to produce more than 2.83 mcm (100 mcf) per day. The companies did not share a development timeline.
Sonangol EP is the upstream subsidiary of Angola’s national energy company, focusing on oil and gas exploration, development and production both onshore and offshore. In Angola, it operates and participates in multiple upstream assets in partnership with international energy companies, supporting the country’s hydrocarbons sector.
